Sony Never Made an 85mm f/1.2, So Sigma Did
Sigma’s 85mm f/1.2 DG Art brings autofocus fast glass to Sony E-mount and L-mount for $1,600, giving photographers a less expensive alternative to Canon’s RF 85mm f/1.2L and Nikon’s Z 85mm f/1.2 S. The lens weighs 905 g, includes custom buttons, an AF/MF switch and a switchable declicked aperture ring, and uses an 82mm filter thread. Testing found autofocus fast and accurate at f/1.2, although users should expect some focus breathing and no Sony in-camera breathing compensation. Compared with Sony’s 85mm f/1.4 GM II and Sigma’s 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, it adds subject separation but roughly 270 g. Wedding shooters should test eye-AF carefully, carry a wider lens, and account for the heavier setup and larger filters.
GoPro wants the Mission 1 to be a serious stills camera
GoPro’s free firmware update for the entire Mission 1 Series—Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro and Mission 1 Pro ILS—targets photography with a claimed zero-lag shutter response and continuous burst shooting. The cameras can capture more than 100 12-megapixel photos or more than 20 RAW images at the maximum 50-megapixel resolution, while a new buffer indicator shows when capacity is nearing its limit. GoPro also changed the shutter sound for clearer confirmation. The update is available through the GoPro Quik app or the company’s website. Mission Monitor gains a histogram, waveform, RGB parade, false color and wireless live preview. For video users, the ILS adds beta anamorphic support from 1.33x to 2.0x squeeze ratios.
